If you are an unsigned artist you will want to sign up for a songwriter or producer (both fall under songwriter category) account and a publisher account.

 

To sign up for a publisher account with either PRO you will need to have a few names picked out for your publishing company.  You can pick variations of the name that you choose. 

 

 

TIP:  You can’t choose a name that someone has used before so be very creative but remember the checks that the royalty company pays you will be made out to the publishing company name.  If you are an artist or producer who doesn’t have that much income coming in from royalties and haven’t yet created your company you might want to put the publishing company in your name.  For example I am Angela Star so if I wanted to create a publishing company and didn’t have my company registered I might choose the name Angela Star Publishing.  They give you 3 choices of names.  For my second choice I might choose Angela Star AS Publishing.  For my third choice I might choose AS Angela Star Publishing.  Either way, when I go to deposit those checks into the bank, I shouldn’t have a problem depositing them into my personal account versus opening up a separate business account.

Too many people have been asking me lately what a press kit is and what it is for.  Well, a press kit is sort of a business card for artists in the music industry.  Industry professionals will see you as a more professional artist or group and they will take you more seriously. 
 
 

Here are some key things to include…


 
* A Cover letter letting everyone know why you are sending the package.
 
*A picture of the artist or group ~  8×10 is what is usually preferred with the artist or groups name and contact info on it.
 
*A CD

*A DVD with live performances and interviews

*A DVD with music videos
 
*Copies of newspaper or magazine clippings where you or your group has been written about.  If you have been written about a TON of times then please don’t include all of them.  Just a few or your package will be bulky. 
 
*A Bio – How else will we know who you are and what you have done in your career?
 
*CONTACT INFO:  This is the most important thing.  If there is no contact info, how can we get back to you?  (Include contact info on everything in case something falls out).

How to package your press kit……
 
Usually artists or groups use a folder to put everything else in.  I have seen fancy ones and I have also seen regular ones.  I have seen customized ones too with all the artist or group info directly on the folder.  (Those are cool!) 
 
THE PRESS KIT IS USUALLY THEN PUT INTO A LARGE ENVELOPE AND SENT OUT TO PROFESSIONALS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY (RECORD LABELS, MANAGERS, PUBLICISTS, PUBLISHERS, MAGAZINES, TELEVISION AND JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE ELSE THAT WILL REQUIRE YOUR INFO).  IT IS A VERY IMPORTANT STEP IN YOUR CAREER TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A PRESS KIT THAT STANDS OUT FROM THE REST SO THAT THE PROFESSIONALS WILL REMEMBER YOU.

A split sheet is used to determine ownership percentages of a song for royalties and publishing splits.  Everyone agrees on a percentage % and fills in their information then everyone signs the split sheet.

 

WHEN IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE A SPLIT SHEET FOR MY SONGS?

If anyone is (featured, wrote part or produced part) of your songs you need a split sheet.

 

HOW ARE SONGS NORMALLY SPLIT UP INTO PERCENTAGES?

Normally there is a producers share (50%) and a writers share (50%). 

 

Example 1 – If there is 1 artist and 1 producer the split would be (50% artist / 50% producer)

 

Example 2 – If there is 2 artists and 1 producer the split would be 25% artist1 / 25% artist2 / 50% producer)

 

Example 3 – If there is 1 artist and 2 producers the split would be (50% artist / 25% producer 1 /25% producer2)

 

The percentages are divided up based on the work put into making the song.  So if someone does more work, they deserve more of a percentage. 

 

Split sheets must be agreed upon and signed by all people involved with the song.  It is a legal contract stating the song percentage splits.  You will need this contract to be able to commercially use your song.

 

It’s never too late to get a split sheet signed for past songs as long as all people agree on percentages and are willing to sign the split sheet.  It protects all people and is VERY NECESSARY.

Sign into your CPanel. 

Once inside, click where it says MAILING LISTS. 

Add a list name where it says LIST NAME.    (this will become the first part of the email address for the group so choose wisely). 

Add a password where it says PASSWORD.  Add the same password where it says PASSWORD (AGAIN).

Sign into your list by entering where it says MODIFY.

Type in your password and then click on LET ME IN.

Once inside you will be using the tabs at the top.  First click on General Options.

You will only change the settings for the ones that I am specifically telling you to change or put something in. 

  • Send monthly password reminders?  NO
  • Send welcome message to newly subscribed members?  NO
  • Text sent to people leaving the list.  If empty, no special text will be added to the unsubscribe   message.  (add a message something like, we are sad to see you leave our email list, we hope        you will reconsider.  please visit www.whateveryourdomainnameis.com to get the latest news  & music.
  • Should the list moderators get immediate notice of new requests, as well as daily notices about collected ones? NO
  • Emergency moderation of all list traffic.  YES
  • Default options for new members joining this list.  CONCEAL THE MEMBER’S ADDRESS & FILTER  DUPLICATE MESSAGES TO LIST MEMBERS (IF POSSIBLE)
  • Maximum length in kilobytes (KB) of a message body.  Use 0 for no limit.  0

Click SUBMIT YOUR CHANGES.

 

At the top of the page you will click the other menu option where it says PRIVACY OPTIONS…

Once on the privacy options page you will only change the settings for the ones that I am specifically telling you to change or put something in.  

Advertise this list when people ask what lists are on this machine.  NO

What steps are required for subscription?  REQUIRE APPROVAL

Is the list moderator’s approval required for unsubscription requests.  NO

 Who can view the subscription list?  LIST ADMIN ONLY

Show member address so they’re not directly recognizable as email addresses?  YES

Click SUBMIT YOUR CHANGES.

 

ADDING MEMBERS TO YOUR LIST

 

Click on MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT. 

Click on MASS SUBSCRIPTION

Subscribe these users now or invite them?  SUBSCRIBE

Send welcome messages to new subscribees?  NO

Sent notifications of new subscriptions to the list owner?  NO

Enter addresses one address per line in the box or click on BROWSE and fine the .txt file that has all of your email addresses. 

Click SUBMIT YOUR CHANGES.

 

SENDING OUT YOUR EMAIL BLAST

 

First you go to your email program (Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 works great) and setup your email the way that you would like it to go out… pictures, links, etc.  Make sure that at the bottom of the email you include unsubscribe instructions and also a physical address for people to be able to write to and unsubscribe.

Once you have the email setup the way that you want it, add the email address in the TO area.  If you named your list djs it will be djs@whateveryourdomainnameis.com you will send the email to that email and it will go out to your whole list at once.

Now you will need to sign into your cpanel. 

Go to the area that says MAILING LISTS.

Go to the area that says MODIFY for the list that you are trying to send an email out for.

Sign in.

Click on TEND TO PENDING MODERATOR REQUESTS on the top right hand side.

Find your email in the list and change the setting next to it to say ACCEPT. 

Check off the button at the top that says DISCARD ALL MESSAGES MARKED DEFER

Hit the button that says SUBMIT ALL DATA

In January 2006, Sinbad Ontiveros from DallasVida.com wrote an article about the Reggaeton movement and chose a few music industry professionals to whom he asked the question, “Is Reggaeton doomed to be a fad like Freestyle music and Miami Booty Bass music???”

There were many different opinions given by the chosen panelists, my reply was this:

“I wouldn’t call Reggaeton a fad at all because it has been around in many forms for years. In the past couple of years it has gotten more popular and for that reason Reggaeton, just like every other style of music that gets popular, has its haters saying that it’s just a fad.  I think that as long as the artists keep making original music with new and improved beats and lyrics, it will be here to stay in some form or another. As far as Reggaeton having what it takes to dominate Latin Music, that’s another story. I would have to say that in some ways it already has started taking control. What do you hear on almost every Spanish Radio station? Reggaeton. What new artists do you hear about on the TV? Reggaeton Artists. What new websites and forums are taking over the Internet? Reggaeton. It has been growing in the public eye for a while now and it’s finally able to have its time in the spotlight. I think that everyone should calm down with the panic that it’s taking over and just let it have its time to shine. I believe that it will evolve in many ways and will eventually slow down but no, I don’t honestly believe that it will ever fully die out.”

Looking back at those times when the radio stations all seemed to uniformly change their formats to play almost all Reggaeton music throughout the day; it makes you wonder if they were trying to phase it out themselves.  The movement was strong back in those days.  Latin Hip Hop and Reggaeton artists were working together for 1 common goal TO BE HEARD. 

Lack of experience, laziness, family, drama, work, life, pride, jealousy, being in the music industry for the wrong reasons, etc. are all things that can get in the way of an artist’s dreams.  I have seen great artists with lots of talent decide overnight that they no longer want to be a part of the music industry because of many of those reasons.  I have also seen artists with no talent blow up in the music industry because they kept their eyes on the prize and never lost focus.   

I have offered my help to many artists throughout my career, trying to teach them about the business side and what they need to do to push themselves along.  It’s kind of amazing to me how many of them actually took my advice and implemented it into their plans but it’s equally amazing to me how many of them didn’t. 

I think it’s about time for Latin Urban Artists to stand back up and reclaim what they were once setting out to dominate.  It’s time to make some decisions.  Ask yourself these questions….

  • Why are you involved in the music industry?  If you said, “Money”, you might as well pack it up and get a day job because you are in the music industry for the wrong reason.  Money is something that comes to you after you handle the things that need to be handled but it can’t be the reason that you decided to do music.

 

  • Do you LOVE music?  If you don’t, again… pack it up and leave.  The Music Industry doesn’t love you either.  I am married to the music.  It’s my life and anyone not ok with that can move on because there is no place for them here!

 

  • Is music a career or a job to you?  If it’s a career, train yourself like you would do for a career.  Enroll in a few classes or if you don’t have the money to invest, watch YouTube and read blogs about the music industry.  There is a TON of information out there for you to use for your training.  Also, make sure that you are always behaving professionally.  If you were working your day job, would you bring your (wife, girlfriend, husband, friends, family members) there to sit with you while you work?  It doesn’t look professional when at your shows you have people with you that don’t have anything to do with your career.  If they don’t have a role to play, they don’t belong there.  Don’t drink, don’t smoke, do drugs or anything else that you wouldn’t do at a normal day job when it’s work time.  Start taking your career more seriously and people will start to take you more seriously.

 

  • How many hours a day do you spend on your music?  I find it crazy how many artists don’t even spend a few hours a day on their music and then tell me that it’s their “career”.  Most people spend at least 8 hours a day working a regular job that they don’t even like and artists that “love” their music careers often put in less time and effort than if they were working for someone else.

 

  • What are your goals (long term) & (short term)?  If you have no goals, how can you achieve them?  Make some realistic goals and some seemingly impossible goals.  I think once you see how easy achieving your realistic goals is you will be surprised at how much harder you fight to achieve the seemingly impossible ones. 

 

  • Do you feel that you are taking the right steps to achieving them?  If not, research what it will others who have reached similar goals did to get there.  Of course, you can’t follow their exact plan of action because the music industry changes daily but you will start to see patterns and realize that these patterns + evolution = success.

 

  • What are some of the things that are stopping you from achieving your goals?  If it’s the people and everyday life situations around you that are stopping you, change things.  Only you can make yourself reach your goals.  Do you want to be successful, or not?

 

  • Are you making the kind of money that you would like to make in this industry?  If you are like most artists and answered NO to this question, what are you doing to change this? 

 

Come on people, let’s make some changes for the better and unite on common goals!  Stop fighting with each other and work harder together to make some danceable commercial music that will be played, loved and remembered for years to come!  You can still keep your Latin Hip Hop or Reggaeton roots without throwing at each other all the time.  What a waste of time and effort!  It makes us all look like amateurs.  Put that same time and effort into something that will benefit you in the long run.  Let’s go get this!
